Berkeley
accepts applications for transfer students to the junior class.
Junior-level transfer students from California community colleges
are given priority consideration for admission. All applications
are accepted for the fall semester only.
The UC System wants you to follow a general
education (GE) pattern of courses (IGETC or a GE Plan specific
to the individual college within the campus) as part of your required
60 transferable semester units. The pattern consists of a variety
of courses from a broad range of disciplines designed to give
you breadth in your education.
IGETC is the Intersegmental General Education
Transfer Curriculum which students can use to transfer to either
the UC or the CSU (there are a few requirements on the pattern
that pertain to only the UC or CSU). Not all colleges and majors
accept IGETC, although all will use most of its courses for credit
towards a GE pattern.
* IGETC is primarily for students who have
not decided on a campus or a particular major.
* IGETC is appropriate for majors that do not require an extensive
amount of lower division course preparation.
If you are planning to take a major within
the Colleges of Engineering, Environmental Design, Chemistry,
Natural Resources, and the Haas School of Business, IGETC would
not be appropriate. Majors in these areas have extensive major
prerequisites that are required for selection purposes.
The College of Letters and Science accepts
IGETC. The college selects its admitted students from those applicants
who have completed the equivalent of its essential skills breadth
requirements. One way of satisfying this selection requirement
is to complete IGETC by the end of the spring term before enrolling
at Berkeley.
How do I know which GE pattern to follow?
Your unique circumstance (previous college
work, major focus) will determine which plan is best for you.
Some majors prefer that you do not concentrate heavily on general
education. Meet with an academic advisor or counselor on your
campus to determine which plan meets your needs.

and go through the step-by-step instructions to see UC transferable
courses as well as different GE patterns for your community college.
What is ASSIST.ORG?
ASSIST is California's official statewide
repository of transfer information. It provides access to the
most current articulation agreements between UC Berkeley and California
community colleges. ASSIST includes information about credit for
general education/breadth requirements, major preparation and
IGETC. It can help you determine if you will receive credit for
courses you've already taken, and how those courses will apply
to your specific academic goals. Articulation agreements may be
updated throughout the year, so check ASSIST periodically to ensure
that you have the most current information about transfer credit.
