One piece of advice (about college, Berkeley, PASS, life
in general): Get involved with an organization on campus;
don’t just study all the time! It’ll open your eyes
to an entirely new world that you were never exposed to before.
And also, OUTREACH at least once! It is truly a life-changing
experience.
PASS
Tell us about your position & why it’s important:
My position is the Outreach Coordinator. It is important because
so many students out there do not know how to apply to college
or simply do not have the motivation to do so. We are privileged
to be at UC Berkeley, and I feel that it is important for us to
go back and help others get to where we are today. It’s
like giving back to the community so that they will have the chance
to experience what we have here at Cal.
What are some of your goals for this year?: To
get as much intern involvement with outreach as I can. I want
every single one of them to outreach at least once and see first-hand
why I love it so much.
First exposure to pass: Spring ’07 as an intern.
Why & how did you decide to get involved?:
First it was through my roommate, Anjeli. I must admit I was a
bit hesitant at first to get involved with this organization.
However, after SoCal outreaches I was hooked. I knew that this
was what I wanted to continue doing.
Why is PASS’ work important?: PASS’s
work is SOOOOOO important because without us and bridges, no one
else would reach out to underrepresented minorities and actively
help them. I think many people do not realize how disadvantaged
we are as minorities, and PASS opens your eyes to that. And once
you realize it, it is almost as if a sense of responsibility bigger
and greater than yourself is instilled in you. And is important
for us to act on this responsibility through the work that PASS
does until we can right the wrongs that have been imposed upon
us.
Where do you see PASS in 10 years?: I see PASS
continuing to change students’ lives – both the ones
we outreach to and the PASS members themselves. Hopefully though,
the work that we have done would have made such an impact that
outreaches would not be necessary anymore, and we would be able
to expand our organization toward other academic service goals.
Anything else we should know? Shout-outs?: I
love my PASS staffers! Thank you so much for embracing me in your
community. You all have truly become my family here at Cal. And
lastly, I still think our password to our PASS email should be
“penguins”. I don’t care if you guys disagree!
